Feb '08 - News From Cartagena, Colombia!

Hey guys!!!
I can’t believe how fast time goes by. Well, let me tell you a little bit about how this first month has been looking like. I am in YWAM’s(Youth With A Mission) DTS(Discipleship Training School) program. One of YWAM’s mottos is “To know God and make Him known”. Before we can go out and tell this world about His great love, we need to truly know Him. Guys, I know Him… but did I really know Him? Could I truly call Him Daddy? He is healing a lot of past hurts and invisible walls that I have put up over the years. Among some of those things is my pride. I didn’t think that I was a proud person until I went through some of these inner healing classes and God spoke to me personally. He is so good and patient. It has been hard laying some of these down at His feet, but He has been a tender father that has never forced anything out of me.
There are 49 students in the program. We are a very international bunch of people. Most of the students are from Colombia, but we have 2 from Switzerland, 2 from Argentina, 1 from Peru, 1 from Mexico, 2 from the US, 5 from Venezuela and then there’s me that has no clue where I am from!!! The other students got a kick out of that when we were introducing ourselves the first week. I stood up when it was my turn and said, “My name is Sylvia and I don’t know where I am from…” hahaha… I thought I would never learn all their names. Besides the 49 students, there are also 40+ staff members on the base. God has helped me with this though!
What does your week look like? Glad you asked! We get up at 5:30am(there are 7 girls in my room with 1 bathroom…), 6:30-7:30am personal devotionals(I like coming to the bay and sitting by the water), 7:30-8am breakfast, 8-9am chores, 9am-12:30pm classes, 12:30-2:30pm lunch and free time, 2:30-5:30pm classes, 5:30-7pm dinner and chores, 7-9pm classes, lights out at 10pm. Even if we could stay up past 10pm, I wouldn’t because we finish the day exhausted. I have gone to the beach once. It is about a 45 minute walk from the base. The bay that I go to in the morning is only a 10 minute walk away.

Physical Needs:
1. My digital only has a memory card that can hold 32-MH. I never realized how small that is.
2. I need a water bottle that is easy to transport and does not take up much space. I had one, but the quality was not very good and it no longer holds water for more than 30 seconds.

Prayer requests:
1. We are going on our first “mini-outreach” this Sat (8th)-Sun (16th). The 49 of us are being separated and sent to places that are within 3 hours of Cartagena. We will be living and working with the churches and supporting the ministries in these areas. They are supposed to be posting the groups and locations later today… Please pray that God would use all of us and that we could be a blessing to all the areas we are going to be reaching out to. That the hearts of the people would be ready to receive. Also that God would teach us students through all of this something knew about His character and ourselves.
2. That God would continue to help me lay down all these things (like pride) at His feet so that He can use me to the fullest extent.
3. Financial support. Please continue praying if this is an area that you would like to participate in. For those of you that have given, I can’t thank you enough for being a part of this with me!

I love you guys bunches!
Sylvia Barnard
